Measure a Product Hunt or Show HN launch
Set up goals, alerts and tagged links before launch day, watch it live, and work out afterwards which launch brought customers, not just traffic.
Launch days are loud: a spike of visitors, a few hours of refreshing, then a long tail. What you want to know a week later is simpler: how many people signed up and paid because of the launch? Here's how to set that up the day before.
The day before
- 1
Track signups as a goal. Add an attribute to your signup button, or call the API after the account is created:
<button data-trakily-goal="signup">Create account</button> <!-- or, after a successful signup --> <script>window.trakily && window.trakily("signup");</script> - 2
Connect your payment provider in Settings → Revenue, so launch-day payments are linked to their visits. See Revenue.
- 3
Create a goal alert in Settings → Alerts for
signupandpayment, optionally posting to a Slack or Discord channel, so you see each signup with its source as it happens. - 4
Check your reports settings. In Settings → Reports, keep Traffic spikes on: you'll get an email naming the source when an hour brings at least three times your usual traffic.
- 5
Tag the links you control. Use
?ref=producthuntas the website link on your Product Hunt page, and tag links in your launch posts and emails (see UTM tagging).
Show HN needs no tagging
Clicks from Hacker News arrive with news.ycombinator.com as the referrer and are grouped in the Social channel. Trakily's Mentions also finds Hacker News posts linking to your domain, so your Show HN post appears on the chart with its points and comments.
On launch day
- Press
Non the dashboard for the last 30 minutes, minute by minute. - Open the Realtime globe to see who is on the site now, where they came from and what page they're on.
- Watch the Referrer tab: comments on other sites often send a second wave you'd otherwise miss.
A week later: what did it bring?
- 1
Set the date range to cover launch day and the days after.
- 2
In the Referrer tab, click
news.ycombinator.comorproducthuntto filter the dashboard to that source. - 3
Read visitors, signups (Goals card), revenue and conversion rate for that source alone. Then clear the filter and compare with your usual traffic.
- 4
Open the Journey tab to read the paths of the customers who came from the launch: how many visits it took and how long they waited before paying.
Breakdowns credit each payment to the session that led to it. Someone who found you on launch day and bought a week later by typing your URL shows up under Direct for that payment, while their journey still shows the launch visit. The Revenue metrics card's Channels tab uses each subscriber's first touch, so it credits launch-day subscribers to the launch.
Trakily shows which channels bring paying customers, not just visitors. Start a 14-day free trial; no card needed.
