Identify users

Attach your own user id, name and email to a visitor with trakily('identify').

Identify tells Trakily who a visitor is once they sign up or log in. It is optional, and you decide what to send.

Call identify

window.trakily("identify", {
  user_id: "usr_123",       // required
  name: "Ada Lovelace",     // optional
  email: "[email protected]", // optional
  plan: "pro", // any other properties
});

user_id is required; without it the call is ignored. The other properties follow the usual property limits, so send at most 10 in total.

Call it after a successful signup or login, or on each page load for logged-in users. Calling it again with the same values is harmless.

What it's used for

  • Names. name (or user_id if there's no name) is shown in realtime visitors, customer journeys and as the visitor.name variable in goal alerts.
  • Payment matching. If a payment can't be linked through checkout metadata, Trakily matches the customer's email from your payment provider to the latest identify call with the same email. See how matching works.

Email only: the payment call

If you only want email-based payment matching, for example on a checkout page where the visitor types their email, send:

window.trakily("payment", { email: "[email protected]" });

This records the email for matching and nothing else.

Privacy

Send only what you need

Identify sends personal data you choose. Only send it where you are allowed to, keep sensitive data out (no passwords, card numbers or government ids), and mention it in your privacy policy. Our terms cover this in more detail.
